MICROMINIATURE INTEGRATED CIRCUIT CRYSTAL OSCILLATOR.
Abstract
The development of a microelectronic integrated circuit crystal oscillator operating at a frequency of 10 megaHertz is described in this report. Various methods of accomplishing the desired results were considered, and reasons are given for the choice of an integrated circuit combination of thick-film printed circuitry and transistor and capacitor chips. Results of early development unit tests are given, showing that problems of adequate freedom from contaminants in a package containing both the crystal and the oscillator circuit can be overcome. This was considered the major uncertainty, but the success of the first experimental units confirmed the soundness of the approach chosen. Modifications of the original crystal design were made to improve the yield of satisfactory crystals, and improved materials and assembly methods were developed to provide greater reliability and provide further freedom from contaminants.
