DENSITY DISCRIMINATION FOR IMAGE EVALUATION.

Abstract

Both theoretical and experimental studies of techniques for automatically monitoring photographic images for printing and/or processing control were carried out. The automated device critically analyzes the photographic image to distinguish between non-terrain imagery, such as clouds and large bodies of water, and actual terrain, and provides suitable information to properly develop images of terrain areas by controlling exposure during printing. The initial effort was applied to printer exposure control, although the technique developed could be applied equally well to the development process. The feasibility of a technique to control printing or processing by making measurements in the Fourier transform was established during the first phase of the program. The second phase of the program consisted of designing and fabricating an experimental model which is attached to a Niagara Printer. This is to be used in line with the printing process to experimentally prove the practicality of the technique. (Author)
