BASIC RESEARCH ON RUBBER-DEGRADING ENZYMES.
Abstract
Two types of microorganism were isolated which grow readily and abundantly on natural and synthetic rubber as well as on various polyisoprenoid substrates. The cultures include a black yeastlike organism and a pinkish Gram-negative bacterium. Filtrates from cultures of each of these organisms possess heat labile rubber-degrading activity as determined by assay procedures using vulcanized rubber bands. In attempts to obtain cell-free culture filtrates with rubber-degrading activity, it was found that the activity was associated with particulate matter consisting of protein and partially degraded polyisoprene.
