LITHIUM-MOIST AIR BATTERY

Abstract

The principal objective of this program is the study of the feasibility of the lithium-moist air high energy storage battery for use as the power system in vehicles. The primary effort was directed to the characterization of the performance of the air electrode in non-aqueous electrolytes. Oxygen has been found to be reducible on platinum and silver in non-aqueous media. Linear and cyclic sweep voltammetry have been used to study the electrochemical reduction of oxygen on smooth platinum electrodes for the lithium perchlorate-nitrosodimethylamine (NDA) and phenyltrimethylammonium hexafluorophosphate nitrosodimethylamine systems. The mechanism of the electrode processes are complex; adsorption effects and chemical kinetics complications have been determined.
