SILICON CARBIDE WHISKER REINFORCED METALLIC MATRIX CONTINUOUS TAPES.

Abstract

Major emphasis was directed toward the improvement of the mechanical properties of aluminum alloy-silicon carbide whisker composites by control of the processing parameters. Room temperature ductility was vastly improved by minimizing carbon pick-up during the hot pressing operation. Slight improvement in strength was also indicated. Tests conducted to evaluate the effect of varying the hot pressing temperature, time, and pressure showed no changes in strength from the standard hot pressing cycle. The effect of whisker orientation, heat treatment, and use of classified whiskers is also reported. (Author)
