BROADBAND X-BAND KLYSTRON.

Abstract

A report is made on the development of a 100 kilowatt CW klystron at 8.0 GHz with a bandwidth of 3 percent. During the course of the program, one pulsed test vehicle and three CW tubes were constructed and tested. All tubes used an extended-interaction output cavity and single gap buncher and penultimate cavities. Each of the three CW tubes generated a minimum of 100 kilowatts of power with gains of 42 to 52 db, and efficiencies between 34 and 45 percent. The bandwidth of two of the tubes was approximately 3.3 percent and of the third 2.7 percent. The report contains a review of the development and construction program and presents performance data for two of the CW tubes. Test results are interpreted qualitatively in terms of a recently improved theory of extended-interaction and a recommendation for further increasing bandwidth is made. (Author)
