RUBIES FOR TEMPERATURE STANDARDS.

Abstract

Substantial improvements in both crystal size and process control were developed during this contract. A particularly large (297 grams) sapphire crystal was grown in 55 hours. The crystal had a uniform growth approximately 10 inches long, with a diamond cross section 1.3 inches by 0.6 inches along the diagonals. Increased understanding of the effects of velocity and supersaturation control by the use of additional reaction products, plus a major redesign of the furnace assembly led to the observed improvements. Areas of continuing difficulty largely center around the defects found in available seed material. (Author)
