ADVANCED STRUCTURAL CONCEPTS EXPERIMENTAL PROGRAM PROJECT ASCEP. VOLUME III. MATERIALS, MANUFACTURING PROCESS DEVELOPMENT AND FABRICATION.

Abstract

A model wing-fuselage-cryogenic tank section of a high L/D winged re-entry vehicle was designed, fabricated and tested. The vehicle design was based on typical trajectory information provided by the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory. Design criteria were established and the most promising structural concept was selected. An approximate 1/3-scale model was designed and analyzed. Element tests were performed in support of the vehicle design. The 1/3-scale model was fabricated and delivered to the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Provisions for measuring temperature, deflection and strains were incorporated into the model. The model was tested under loading and heating conditions simulating aerospace flight at the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory structural test facility. Test data were analyzed and the adequacy of design analysis methods and the structural concept was evaluated. (Author)
