CHARGE EXCHANGE AND MOBILITY OF ATOMIC IONS IN THEIR PARENT GASES,

Abstract

For atomic ions in their parent gas the total, charge-exchange, and first three transport cross-sections are investigated quantum-mechanically and in the polarization, semiclassical, impact-parameter, and random-phase approximation over the energy range of elastic scattering. It is shown that the cross-sections are linear in the gerade-ungerade pairs of molecular states. An exact relation between diffusion and charge-exchange cross-sections is derived. Detailed calculations are given for helium and cesium. The cross-sections exhibit structure due to orbiting and glory. The ion mobility however depends smoothly on temperature. A simple mobility formula is given. (Author)
