ACUTE INTESTINAL DISORDERS IN SHELTER GROUPS.

Abstract

The report evaluates the magnitude of acute intestinal disorders in human shelter occupancy studies and other closed ecosystems and estimates the impact of such disorders on shelter occupants to permit better planning for the care of those afflicted and for minimizing the impact on unafflicted occupants. The data are presented as a basis for prevention, control, and treatment of diarrhea in shelters. The evidence produced also demonstrates the susceptibility of the gastrointestinal system to emotional influences and indicates the need for preventive measures for fear-motivated behavior during enforced shelter living; the need for a standardized system of reporting the prevalence of diarrheal diseases is also indicated.
