COPOLYMERS OF TETRAFLUOROETHYLENE FOR SUPERIOR DIELECTRIC MATERIALS.

Abstract

The purpose of the project was to investigate the copolymerization of tetrafluoroethylene monomer with ethylene, propylene, 4-methylpentene-1, and styrene. The copolymerizations involved radiation-induced copolymerization at low temperature (-78C.) and at room temperature. The scope of the investigation covered the effect of radiation dose, dose rate, monomer compositions, oxygen and moisture, etc., on the copolymerization reaction and the properties of the resultant copolymers. Chemical and physical properties such as melting point, solubility, composition and tensile strength were evaluated. Young's modulus and the creep compliance were also determined for the tetrafluoroethylene-ethylene copolymers. In addition, the dielectric properties such as dielectric constant and dissipation factor of the copolymer were measured.
