DEVELOPMENT OF ELECTROCHEMICAL ENERGY STORAGE UNIT FOR VEHICLE PROPULSION.

Abstract

A 'paper' design of a 100 WH/lb battery has been made using computer simulation techniques. This design is based on the Sohio secondary battery which has a solid lithium-aluminum anode, carbon cathode, and fused lithium chloride-potassium chloride electrolyte. The battery is self-contained and operates in the temperature range from 355 to 550C. The electrochemical principles of the battery have been fully verified and prototype cells have been delivered to the Government which demonstrate the principles. These cells were not designed for maximum energy density and deliver 6 to 8 WH/lb. (Author)
