OPTICAL POINT TRANSFER INVESTIGATION.

Abstract

The theory of two-dimensional optical cross-correlation is reviewed with particular attention to the cross-correlation of aerial stereo photographs in the presence of terrain slope and roughness. Three experimental optical correlators are described employing both conventional and holographic techniques with spatial filtering. The problem of image distortion correction is considered and the applicability of refractive, diffractive, and hologram techniques are discussed. Experimental data are presented. An experimental two-dimensional optical correlator with continuously variable image distortion correction is described. From the results of the study it is concluded that the transfer of passpoints by optical correlation techniques is entirely feasible. A conceptual design for a fully automatic optical point transfer device is presented. (Author)
