AN INVESTIGATION OF THE WIPED FILM CONDENSER FOR SHIPBOARD APPLICATION.

Abstract

The feasibility of utilizing a wiped film condenser as a shipboard unit was investigated. The performance of this condenser, which employs mechanical wiping of the condensing surface, was compared with that of main steam turbine surface condensers used on two United States Navy ships. The results indicated that a wiped film condenser would occupy considerably less volume and would be lower in overall height than a comparable surface condenser. Adaptation of the wiped film condenser to shipboard use is primarily dependent upon developing a design that will provide greater facility in the fabrication and maintenance of the condensing surfaces.
