CRYSTALS FOR OPTICAL MASER APPLICATIONS.

Abstract

Increased concentrations of neodymium activator ions have been incorporated in optical-quality single crystals of yttrium aluminum garnet. The Czochrlaski technique has been used to prepare single crystals from yttrium aluminum garnet melts which have contained up to 11.5 atomic percent neodymium activator ions together with an equal concentration of size-compensating cations. Lutetium was utilized as the size-compensating cation in these crystal growth experiments. Preliminary optical measurements have been performed upon slices cut from representative single crystals. In addition to absorption and fluorescence measurements, lifetime studies are being utilized to determine the optimum concentrations of activator ions. Laser rods are in the process of fabrication for performance evaluation studies. (Author)
