DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF UNITS AND HARDWARE FOR PROJECT ALARR.

Abstract

The design and fabrication of additional recovery units and associated hardware for ALARR required an advanced design study; incorporation of certain modifications; testing; procurement of additional recovery units and refurbishment kits in two phases; design and procurement of AGE; and assuming system responsibility for the recovery unit and its mechanical and electrical compatibility with the booster and the specified payloads. Minimal design studies were conducted as necessary to improve the system reliability and recovery units were fabricated. An advanced design study then was conducted and additional recovery units were manufactured in accordance with the results of the study. A test set and transporter/loader were designed and fabricated. The results of the field launches indicate that, with each succeeding design change and hardware delivery, the reliability of the system increased and the system became more flexible and more self-sufficient.
