DEVELOPMENT OF A BROADBAND, S-BAND AMPLIFIER FOR USE IN THE SIGNAL PROCESSING TEST FACILITY.

Abstract

As an outcome of the cold and hot tests on tube No. X1, the electron gun has been modified for increased beam diameter, greater voltage hold-off, and lower voltage gradients, and the output transducer design has been modified to prevent degradation of the output VSWR during attachment to the output centipede stack. The input and output values of VSWR and the termination VSWR have all been improved over those used in tube No. X1. The alumina pillbox window has been tested to at least 25 MW peak and 67 kW average power in the resonant ring. Some mechanical difficulties have been experienced in obtaining a vacuum-tight window for tube No. X2, but hydrostatic pressure tests indicated sufficient mechanical strength for window pressurizing. The second experimental tube, a TWT, is assembled and awaiting an rf output window. Work has begun on tube No. X3. Some klystron cavity work is being done to obtain a wide frequency tuning range for the cavities of this experimental Twystron amplifier. (Author)
