GASEOUS ION LASER RESEARCH.

Abstract

Progress is reported under a program to improve the lifetime, reliability, and operational characteristics of high power argon ion lasers. The completion of a second life test of an oxide cathode and the initiation of a life test of an impregnated tungsten cathode are reported. The characteristics of pyrolytic graphite and graphite overcoated with tungsten as laser bore materials are described. The excellent performance and erosion resistance of a disk-bore tube constructed of thin tungsten disks separated by large gaps is reported. Experiments to improve the cathode throat design and to evaluate the effectiveness of internal gas return paths are described. Measurements of the noise modulation of the laser output as a function of the operating parameters of the discharge have been made. (Author)
