ENGINEERING PROPERTY DATA ON ROCKET PROPELLANTS.

Abstract

Progress in the analytical and experimental characterization of the physical properties of selected liquid propellants is presented in three phases. In Phase I, a continuous review of the literature was conducted to ensure the acquisition and documentation of the latest possible propellant properties data for evaluation and possible inclusion into a propellant properties handbook. Phase II experimental efforts have resulted in the following: (1) Preparations for additional ClF3 pressure-volume-temperature measurements in the critical region; (2) Selection of a technique to determine saturated liquid densities of MMH and N2H4-UDMH(50-50) over a wider temperature range; (3) Fabrication of new apparatus for sonic velocity measurements in MHF-3 and MHF-5; (4) Improvements in the apparatus being used to determine nitrogen and helium solubility in ClF5; (5) The fabrication of a capillary-rise apparatus for surface tension measurements on MHF compositions; (6) Saturated and pressurized-liquid viscosity measurements on ClF5 and ClF3. Phase III efforts included evaluation and assembly of all data generated during Phases I and II and the continued correlation and compilation of N2O4 physical property data. (Author)
