GROWTH RATES OF THE ION-CYCLOTRON RESONANCE INSTABILITY.

Abstract

Earlier work is extended and growth rates of the unstable finite ion and electron temperature modes are calculated. Effects of ion anisotropy and electron temperature are determined for both the infinite plasma model and the finite problem of one or two ion orbits across. Results are plotted in a two-dimensional parameter space representing essentially the magnetic field strength and electron density. The largest growth rates are found to occur in those regions where the electron plasma frequency is approximately integral multiples of the ion-cyclotron frequency. Comparison of the results of this analysis with some experimental observations is possible. (Author)
