FEASIBILITY STUDY MOBILE PLASTIC FABRICATION UNIT.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to determine the feasibility and means of exploiting the potential of one or more mobile plastic fabrication units for (1) a wide variety of field-produced items to enhance operations in remote area conflict and counter-insurgency operations and (2) Army permanent, semi-permanent and temporary construction missions. Information used in the discussions and analysis of this report was gained from surveys of pertinent literature, conference notes, and visits to Government and industrial establishments. The results of this study have revealed a diversity of potential applications and a wide number of technological approaches. These have demanded careful screening and appraisal. Areas for immediate exploitation are spiral generation of foam plastic structures for building shells, techniques for application of foam and fiberglass reinforced resins, and techniques for use of a general purpose vacuum forming unit. Other concepts have been explored whose feasibility can only be assessed when special needs are discovered or when the state-of-the-art is advanced. (Author)
