STRESS-WAVE PROPAGATION IN LUMPED- PARAMETER RODS OF VARYING MESH.

Abstract

A computer program was developed to study the propagation of stress waves in a one-dimensional elastic rod with regions of different mesh size. This program was utilized to study the propagation of stress waves in both uniform-mesh and varying-mesh rods. The 'frequency filter' character of lumped-parameter systems was evident from the results. It was noted that spurious reflections occurred at the interface when it was attempted to propagate a sharp-fronted wave from a fine-mesh region into a coarse-mesh region. (Author)
