RESPONSE AMPLITUDE OPERATORS AND WHIPPING RESPONSE OF A CARRIER MODEL IN RANDOM WAVES.
Abstract
Tests of a 6-ft model of an ESSEX-Class carrier were conducted in various sea states in head seas only at speeds of zero and 13.8 knots (full-scale) in the 140-foot basin at the Naval Ship Research and Development Center (NSRDC). Response amplitude operators (RAOs) for bending moment amidships and pitch angle were derived from the ratio of the response and wave spectra for each sea state and speed. The effect of speed on the magnitude of the RAOs was sufficiently small that for each response, a single RAO could be employed to characterize ship response to a given sea condition. (Author)
