A VORTEX PRESSURE AMPLIFIER.

Abstract

An experimental investigation program was conducted to establish and define the operating characteristics of a vortex pressure amplifier over a supply pressure range from 14.7 to 750 psia. Seven units with different geometric configurations were constructed and their operating characteristics investigated. Operating characteristics investigated were pressure recovery, pressure gain, flow characteristics, frequency response, step response, ambient temperature effects, impedance matching, signal to noise characteristics, linearity, and hysteresis. Extensive performance data for these characteristics are included. Effects of the various geometric parameters governing the operation of the unit as well as its limitations are evaluated, and test results are summarized. A preliminary design procedure that outlines the necessary steps in designing a vortex pressure amplifier for a specific application is presented. (Author)
