JP-4 FUELED MOLTEN CARBONATE FUEL CELLS.
Abstract
The endurance and inherent long life capabilities of the present cell components, such as nickel, silver, and copper electrodes, and the molten carbonate electrolyte, were demonstrated by achieving over 11,000 hours of continuous testing with reformed JP-4 fuel and air-CO2 oxidant. Cell performance was determined as a function of feed gas utilization for both differential and integral conversion per pass. Design calculations were made for a 20-kw molten carbonate system. Based on 100 amp/sq ft at 0.7 volt, 40% H2 utilization, and 50% O2 utilization, a system efficiency of 20.2% was obtained. Similarly for 100 amp/sq ft at 0.6 volt, 70% H2 utilization, and 50% O2 utilization, a system efficiency of 30.2% was obtained. Preliminary design calculations were made for a hybrid system consisting of a liquid metal battery-molten salt fuel cell capable of providing a continuous average power of 22 kw, and a maximum intermittent power of 45 kw for up to 10 minutes per hour.
