SMOKE MEASUREMENT FACILITY.

Abstract

A controlled-environment smoke measurement facility at Redstone Research Laboratories is described. The details of the hardware and the instrumentation are discussed and the limitations are assessed. The results of rocket motor firings in the chamber are discussed in terms of aerosol behavior and smoke visibility. The problem of sampling or measuring the aerosol is evaluated as a problem in defining and determining the visibility to the human eye. The correlation between the measured extinction and either visibility or obscuration is shown. (Author)
