RECRUITING OCEANOGRAPHERS.
Abstract
As of July, 1967 the U. S. Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) employed 420 practicing oceanographers, 120 marine geologists and geophysicists, 78 engineers, and 200 technicians. As a result, just to take care of normal attrition requires recruiting at least 100 new marine scientists and engineers annually, while the shortage of technicians requires recruiting about the same number annually as well. NAVOCEANO utilizes four short-term recruiting methods: the Civil Service Commission's 'Registers of Availability'; spontaneous applications to NAVOCEANO; formal campus recruiting visits; and informal campus contacts. Four long-term recruiting methods are also employed; operation of a summer student trainee program; a cooperative university study plan; an award program at the International Science Fair; talks, visits, and sale of training materials to grade and high schools.
