ON THE STEROID TREATMENT OF HYPOTENSIVE SHOCK STATES,

Abstract

A discussion is presented of the advantages of steroid therapy in cases of post-operative hypotensive shock which do not respond to the classical treatment. Cases which do not respond to the usual anti-shock treatment are deemed to be those involving adrenocortical insufficiency and the introduction of ACTH and hydrocortisone is considered mandatory. The basic condition of successful therapy for irreversible shock is the classical shock therapy, and if this proves unsuccessful, immediate intravenous infusion of cortisone should be applied. The steroid treatment does not replace, and should not precede the standard anti-shock treatment and is ineffective by itself. When correctly used, it is a means of saving life, and dramatic response to this form of therapy has been widely noted.
