EXTREME MOMENTUM PROFILES IN THE TROPOSPHERE

Abstract

An attempt is made to develop a climatology of extreme wind and momentum profiles in the troposphere in winter for coastal and oceanic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. The percent frequency distribution of extreme soundings with respect to the average position of the polar jet-stream axis in winter is determined for a pilot sample of stations. The extreme momentum profiles are divided into a number of classes. Their percent frequency distribution is computed, and 14 typical soundings are presented which characterize the range of observed profiles.
