CLOSE-IN TARGET ELECTRONIC CANCELLATION (CITEC) SYSTEM FOR A CONTINUOUS TRANSMISSION FREQUENCY MODULATED SONAR,

Abstract

This report describes the development of a narrow band notch filter to effectively cancel close-in targets and undesirable crosstalk in a Continuous Transmission Frequency Modulated Sonar (CTFM) system. The frequency of the notch is easily controlled independent of the notch bandwidth to allow frequency tracking of the crosstalk. Described are the specific crosstalk problems encountered with the AN/UQS-2(XWO-1) sonar and their solutions. Also described is an extension of the system to partially equalize the higher attenuation at greater sonar ranges thereby considerably reducing the dynamic range of signals to be handled by the sonar set. The design of a functional solid state unit is described which accomplishes this selective filtering. Laboratory and field test performance is given along with other possible uses and extensions of the system. (Author)
