THE APPLICATION OF SHEAR SPINNING TO CYLINDRICAL SECTIONS.

Abstract

An investigation was made to improve techniques in forward and back extruding of cylindrical sections on the 42 in. Cincinnati Hydrospin Machine and to determine the metallurgical effects of varying percentages of reduction of 6061-0 Al. Alloy. It is stated there is a definite need in industry for cannister type parts of lengths longer than deep drawing will permit and that such parts however, be restricted by the size of the machine available and the basic properties of the material to be extruded. All work was accomplished using an existing extrusion roller and mandrel. Two forward extrusions with the material in tension and two back extrusions with the material in compression were run. It is concluded; Al. Alloy 6061-0 may be extruded up to a 94% reduction without intermediate annealing. With a machine in top condition it appears that shear spinning would prove more economical for the production of cannister type parts than the machining of ring forgings. (Author)
