PIN DIODE PHASE SHIFTER.

Abstract

This effort called for a study and investigation of X-band PIN diodes and diode phase shifter techniques. These investigations were directed toward the development of a high peak power X-band PIN diode phase shifter. As design goals the breadboard phase shifter was to have a 5% 3 db bandwidth centered around 9 GHz, 13 elements of 13.8 degrees phase shift each, a peak output power capability of 60 kw, an average power output of 10 watts, a loss of .16 db per element and no more than one PIN diode per element. A three element phase shifter was designed and constructed using 3 PIN diodes in reduced height waveguide. This phase shifter would shift 45 degrees in three steps. It was tested at 60 kilowatts of peak power and 10 watts of average power. The input VSWR was 1.3 to 1 and the insertion loss was about .22 db per element. (Author)
