MAGNETIC TRANSITION TEMPERATURES OF INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS OF RARE EARTH WITH COBALT AND IRON.

Abstract

The Curie temperature (Tc) of over fifty intermetallic compounds of the R2Fe17, R6Fe23, RFe3, RFe2, RCo5, and R2Co7 series was determined (R is a rare earth or yttrium). Initial permeability vs temperature curves obtained from a small ac field were used to determine Tc. In the R-Fe series Tc ranged from -182C (Ce2Fe17) through a maximum of 520C (GdFe2) to -38C (Lu2Fe17). The Curie temperature of Ce-, Pr-, Nd-, Sm-, and Y-Co5 ranged from 374C (CeCo5) to 724C (SmCo5). The R2Co7 series ranged from a Tc of -122C (Ce2Co7) through a peak of 489C (Gd2Co7) to 186C (Lu2Co7). (Author)
