IMPACT OF THE EXECUTIVE ON HIS POSITION.
Abstract
This study was conducted to determine the impact of the executive on his position and the influence of situational factors in ascertaining his concept and performance of his job. Self-report forms administered to 193 Department of Army executives in Civil Service grades GS-13 to GS-17 yielded data on personal background, work setting and job activities, as well as the incumbent's perception of the requirements of his job and the leadership climate. Parallel questionnaires completed by the immediate supervisor of each executive provided information on the incumbent's job and job performance. Depth interviews were conducted with 76 incumbents in the sample to examine sources of change in job activities and difficulties in basic management functions. Eight factors identified by analysis of responses about job activities were statistically compared with variables relating to personal characteristics and organizational setting as well as performance ratings.
