RELATIONS BETWEEN STATIC AND DYNAMIC CHARACTERISTICS FOR A SLOWLY OSCILLATING BLUNT RE-ENTRY BODY WITH NON-LINEAR AMPLITUDE EFFECTS. PART 2. PLANAR MOTION, PITCH OSCILLATION AND TRANSLATION,

Abstract

A blunt re-entry body with highly non-linear aerodynamic characteristics is analyzed in planar motion with two degrees of freedom, pitch and translation. The translatory degree of freedom contributes towards dynamic stability and it is shown that for a certain blunt cylinder-flare re-entry body the limit cycle pitch amplitude is approximately 30 percent less for the planar motion than for pure pitch oscillations.
