THERMOCOUPLE JUNCTION PRESSURE TRANSDUCERS.

Abstract

The development, testing, and calibration of a transducer for measuring shock-wave pressures in solids are presented. The sensing element of the transducer consists of a thermocouple junction formed by pressing a 3/16-inch diameter K-Monel metal ball against a copper plate. When a shock wave traverses this junction, an output voltage is produced which can be displayed and recorded on an oscilloscope. The transducer was tested and calibrated by impacting it with projectiles accelerated in a powder gun having a one-inch diameter barrel. Shock-wave pressures of up to 420 kilobars were generated. The results of 28 calibration shots are presented in graphs and tables. Five characteristic points on the transducer-output wave form were recognized in nearly every shot. Voltages measured at these points are shown to be directly proportional to shock-wave pressure. Times at these points are either constant or directly proportional to projectile impact velocity. A scale drawing of the transducer is given with a description of the materials used in its construction. Instructions are given for the installation and instrumentation of the transducer and for the interpretation of its output. (Author)
