COMPATIBILITY STUDIES, VOLUME II. APPENDIX 1: AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF THE SCATTERING OF ELECTROMAGNETIC RADIATION FROM PERIODICALLY ROUGH SURFACES.

Abstract

An experimental investigation of the scattering of a beam of electromagnetic radiation by conducting periodically rough surfaces has been made. The measurements were performed at X-band using surface amplitudes and wavelengths on the order of the microwave wavelength. It has been found that wide beams may be decomposed into small regions that can be treated as plane waves for the purpose of calculating the influence of the reflected wave on the received signal. Results derived from triangular and sinusoidal surfaces that have the same amplitude and wavelength were very similar indicating that, for the surface dimensions considered, the presence of sharp edges is insignificant in comparison to the reflections from the flat, or nearly flat, sides. Several graphs are presented that illustrate the change in the received pattern with the height of the transmitting antenna above the rough surface. (Author)
