A FORTRAN IV PROGRAM FOR THE CALCULATION OF THE EQUILIBRIUM CONFIGURATION OF A FLEXIBLE CABLE IN A UNIFORM STREAM.

Abstract

A FORTRAN IV program is described that is in use on the IBM 7090 system at the Naval Ship Research and Development Center to calculate the equilibrium configuration of a flexible cable in a uniform stream in the plane determined by the direction of motion of the stream and by the direction of the force of gravity. By utilizing coefficients for the first few terms of a trigonometric series, the program is capable of using a wide variety of hydrodynamic loading functions which have been assumed to represent the elemental forces on towcables of many different types. In addition, the cable drag coefficient may be easily varied as a function of Reynolds number. The computer is programmed to check automatically the input data and to reject some inputs with incorrect sign conventions or initial conditions. (Author)
