DESIGN CRITERIA FOR FUTURE DATA BLOCK READER/WRITER SYSTEMS.
Abstract
The basis of this study is the requirement for a common, machine-readable data block on all reconnaissance and mapping file in accordance with MIL-STD-782B. This study evaluates the effectiveness of the present operational data block reader/writer (DBR/W) systems and identifies the research and development currently sponsored by the military services. Several new devices, made available by recent advances in the state-of-the-art, are evaluated to determine their potential for improved DBR/W systems, and a comparison is made of those devices which have been developed to the phototype stage. An analysis is made of present and predicted DBR/W systems requirements and the main limitations and operational constraints associated with meeting these requirements are identified. Recommendations are made as to the steps necessary for developing improved DBR/W systems for current and future use. (Author)
