COMPATIBILITY STUDIES. VOLUME IV. APPENDIX 3. SCATTERING OF A BEAM WITH FINITE BEAMWIDTH FROM AN IMPEDANCE SURFACE.
Abstract
The purpose of this research was to investigate beam scattering from rough surfaces. The results of the analysis are the following: The properties of entire beam pattern functions originating from finite apertures were reviewed and restated in three theorems which include the relationship between phase pattern function and amplitude pattern function. In particular, the far field solution of a strip continuum of line sources for arbitrary cross-sectional current distribution was derived. For the case of diverging beams, incident on rough surfaces, a more general scatter integral had to be derived based on the vector Helmholtz equation. This necessitated the formulation of more general boundary conditions including cross-polarization effects. A general scatter integral was then developed by extending the work of Brekhavskikh, Beckmann and Fung. It was shown that the choice of a more suitable coordinate system allows for direct integration over the beam spread angle instead of integration over limited regions along the scatter surface. The application of the derived method showed that this general scatter integral, involving a dyadic Green's function together with the technique of integration may be considered a pertinent method in solving problems of beam scattering from rough surfaces.
