HEAT TRANSFER RATES TO PLATES, CYLINDERS, AND SPHERES IN HIGHSPEED RAREFIED-GAS FLOW,

Abstract

This technical note was prepared for the purpose of establishing the relations for the rate of heat transfer to various component parts located in the rarefied portion of the flow field of an expanding jet. In this work only simple shapes have been considered and the relations are given in a general form so as to be useful for other problems of aerodynamic heating in rarefied gases. The free-molecule-flow region has been treated extensively, using the rigorous theory, while for the slip-flow region only approximate values, obtained by connecting the continuum with the free-molecule-flow solution, are given.
