CONVERGENCE ZONE WIDTH ANOMALY IN THE NORTH PACIFIC.
Abstract
In the North Pacific Ocean an anomaly exists in that certain convergence zone widths are much narrower than the 3 to 5 miles normally expected. In some regions convergence zone widths may be extremely small, approaching zero. The ratio of sound velocity gradients above and below the limiting depth apparently is the factor controlling the width of the zone. Selected sound velocity profiles and surface sound velocities were used to generate a series of monthly charts showing regions where this anomaly occurs. (Author)
