ANALYSIS OF STRAIGHT BEAMS UNDER ARBITRARY TWO-DIMENSIONAL LOADING AND RESTRAINT,

Abstract

The report presents a method for determining displacements and stresses in a straight beam. The method employed is one based upon Castigliano's Theorem of Equilibrium. Use of a digital computer is a requisite for the solution of the equations derived, and for this reason First Finite Differences are substituted for the partial derivatives of the Theorem, and the equations are written in matrix form. Programs for the solution of these equations are available. These programs are so designed that the analyst need only idealize the structure and then supply stiffness, geometric, and loads data to the computer. Digital output consists of reactions, internal loads, point displacements, and rotations. The expressions developed here permit account to be taken of thermal effects. (Author)
