MOLECULAR F-NUMBERS FROM HIGH RESOLUTION SPECTROSCOPY.

Abstract

The currently available information on electron transition moments has been reviewed for the O2 (SR), N2 (1+), N2(2+) N2(+) (1-) and NO-beta systems. This review shows that the O2 (SR) transition moment on internuclear separation is not well known for the remaining systems, with the possible exception of the N2 (1+) bands. Knowledge of the NO-beta and N2(+) (1-) systems is poor. An experimental program was conducted in which measurements were made of the radiation emitted from behind reflected shock waves, for 2 percent mixtures of NO and O2 in argon. The data were analyzed using a computer program to sum the contributions from the individual lines of the various overlapping bands included in the spectral bandpass. Electronic transition moments were obtained for the NO-beta bands; the results were analyzed in the r-centroid approximation and show a variation which is in the opposite direction to that indicated by previous measurements; no explanation could be found in terms of experimental error or analytical procedure. The O2 (SR) data were not completely analyzed and the results are presented in the form of emissivities. (Author)
