THEORETICAL CALCULATIONS FOR A PRECURSOR SIMULATION.
Abstract
Three theoretical calculations of a precursor simulation experiment conducted during Operation Distant Plain are presented. In each case a 30-psi shock wave impinges upon a region containing helium at ambient pressure and temperature. The calculations each utilized previous AFWL calculations as boundary conditions for the incident shock-wave parameters. The first and second calculations were in two dimensions with the incident shock parameters taken from the original Distant Plain Event 1 calculations. In both cases the shock interacted with a cylinder of helium. The helium cylinder was 50 feet long in the first case and infinitely long in the second. The third calculation was one dimensional with an infinite region of helium surrounding the shock wave. The calculations were made for comparison with and clarification of data obtained during Operation Distant Plain, Event 1 and for comparison with nuclear precursor studies being carried out by AFWL.
