RESEARCH FOR HYDROTHERMAL GROWTH OF SINGLE CRYSTALS.

Abstract

An investigation of various methods of growing high-quality BeO crystals for use as seeds in the hydrothermal method is underway. The results obtained so far show that the rocking autoclave variation of the hydrothermal method, and the flux evaporation technique appear to be the more likely methods of achieving this objective. The present crystal growth study of ruby has demonstrated that there is at least qualitatively an inverse correlation between the quality of the crystals grown, and the concentration of dissolved material present in the solution. These results suggest that 'veiling' is due to the trapping of the growth medium inside the growing crystals. This is typical of flux grown crystals. The effects of pH on the growing crystal are being evaluated. These results suggest that the temperature and concentration of the K2CO3 solution now used for the hydrothermal growth of ruby may be too high, resulting in too fast a rate of crystal growth, and the presence of inclusions.
