DOUBLE-BASE BINDER IMPROVEMENT.

Abstract

A base grain CMDB propellant was prepared successfully using a casting solvent (TEGDN/TMETN mixture) that was high in TEGDN content. The mechanical properties of this propellant will be compared with those of propellants of similar composition but processed by the slurry cast technique. The resulting data will allow the separation of the contributions of processing and plasticizer towards mechanical property differences. In investigations of means to improve the mechanical properties of slurry casts CMDB propellants, efforts were concerned with structure and properties comparison of various commercial forms of nitrocellulose and with the preparation and characterization of structurally modified nitrocellulose. These studies include measurement of gelation rates by light transmission, preparation of propellant mixes for comparison of mechanical properties of several forms of nitrocellulose, and preparation and analysis of acetate and carbamate derivatives. The derivatives are being studied in the expectation that they will significantly increase the effectiveness of plasticization and crosslinking. (Author)
