FUNCTIONALITY DETERMINATION OF BINDER PREPOLYMERS.
Abstract
Analyses of P-BEP, 9542-60B, polymer fractions obtained by fractional precipitation show that the molecular weight range extends from below 700 to above 5000. The functionality shows no significant variation with molecular weight for molecular weights above 2700 (78% of the total polymer). At lower molecular weights (1500 and below), however, the functionality drops below 1.0. A new type of vapor pressure osmometer is being evaluated. The apparent ease with which one can change from one solvent to another and the fact that the temperature control system is continuously variable are the two attractive features of the new instrument. A CNR-nitroso prepolymer, a fluorocarbon terpolymer, having carboxy-functionality is being characterized with respect to functionality and functionality distribution. The prepolymer which has an average functionality of 2.9 contains 10% of the nonfunctional polymer component. (Author)
