MEASURED STRUCTURAL RESPONSE TO AIRBLAST-INDUCED GROUND MOTION IN PROJECT BACK FILL.

Abstract

Presented are the results obtained from several buried model structures subjected to a traveling air shock produced by a high-explosive simulation technique (HEST). The structures tested were a surface-flush vertical cylinder, a hemispherical dome buried one diameter, and a series of small model cylindrical structures varying from 2 inches in diameter to 16 inches in diameter and buried 36 inches. The dome and the vertical cylinder were instrumented with on-structure soil stress gages and the resulting pressures are presented. The acceleration of the dome and the velocities and accelerations of the vertical cylinder were measured. The small model structures were instrumented to measure the average pressure applied to the structure, the accelerations, and for the largest of the small model structures the velocities. These results are presented to document the data for future application and evaluation. (Author)
