PRIMARY BATTERY STUDY REPORT,

Abstract

An investigation was made on the application of primary (one-shot) batteries in the Atlas Missile. The objective was to determine: If primary batteries can be adapted for Atlas use; the advantages of using primary batteries; the experience gained by other contractors in the testing and use of these batteries; sources of supply. The following advantages of primary batteries over secondary batteries were disclosed by this study: Simplified handling procedures; minimum storage problems; need not be activated until required for use (Activation can be accomplished by manual or remote controls); can be designed in any configurations; can meet more strigent electrical design requirements; design features can be incorporated to reduce weight. These advantages indicate that primary batteries can and should be used in the Atlas program. (Author)
